A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I had the chance to attend a wellness retreat. It was only a 24 hour experience, but we returned home feeling so refreshed! Taking the time out to break away from our typical routine and focus on reflection and self-care for a bit was just what we needed.
One of my favorite things about this time of year is the reminder it offers us to slow down a little. The summer is in full-swing and it seems like just about everybody is dreaming up some fun in the sun. Seeing so many others carving out time in their busy schedules for a little rest and relaxation always makes me want to as well! But sometimes, finding the time and money to do so can feel like a big challenge.
I don’t have any exotic trips planned this year or much time off of work. But I’ve been thinking a lot about how to take advantage of this season and the time that I do have. So even though I’m not traveling very far, I do still have some excitement to look forward to this summer. The retreat a few weeks ago is one example. But there are all kinds of adventures we can take without going too far. And there are plenty of restful activities we can engage in without being on vacation.
For today’s post, I’m sharing some of the ideas that I came up with. Because we all deserve a little time to rest, relax, and re-energize ourselves. And going away on vacation is not our only option!
When our choices feel limited, a little creativity can go a long way.
Here are 10 fun summer activities that don’t require getting on an airplane or even driving very far:
Take a day trip.
Visit a nearby city that you don’t usually spend time in. Enjoy the excitement of traveling without much of the hassle that’s usually involved.
Go on a hike.
There’s nothing quite like the magic of nature to refresh the mind and soul.
Watch an outdoor movie.
Take advantage of the warmer weather and go see a movie in a scenic location.
Read a fun book.
Hang out in bed and get lost in a good story.
Spend more time with your friends.
Make it a point to get in even more quality time with people whose company you enjoy most. Do something together that you’ve never done before and create memories that will last long beyond the summer.
Attend a workshop (or one day retreat like us!).
Sign up for and participate in a program that’s both relaxing and enriching. It’s always a good idea if you’ll come out of it feeling more calm and connected to yourself.
Book yourself a spa treatment through a discount site.
Indulge in a little luxury, but avoid those luxurious prices. There are plenty affordable spa options available on apps and websites like Groupon and LivingSocial.
Enjoy a meal at a restaurant that you’ve never been to.
Switch things up with this simple idea. Go to that spot you’ve been eyeing for months. Or maybe the new place you heard about from a friend or colleague. And if all else fails, there’s always yelp.
Check out a local museum that you’re not familiar with.
Explore a gem in your own city and learn something new while you’re at it!
Have a staycation.
Take a few days off of life and stay home. Create a mini-retreat for yourself. Include any or all of the activities listed above!
