My Five Minute Transformation

Are you a morning person? I am, but it was only in the last couple of years that I actually began enjoying my morning routine. Before this shift, most of my days started out in a stressful rush. I’d usually wake up just in time to quickly get ready for the day ahead. But jumping out of bed like that never really suited my slower-paced temperament. It just left me feeling frazzled and on-edge right from the start of each day.

After realizing how miserable I was beginning every day like this, I started entertaining the possibility of waking up earlier. But I was pretty resistant to this idea since sleep already felt like a limited commodity. Letting even more of it go would be a tough commitment for me to stick with. I knew that if I was going to make any change, it’d have to to be small and I’d need something to look forward to upon waking up.

So I got some suggestions from mentors and eventually decided to try waking up just five minutes earlier and journaling before doing anything else for the day. This was only an experiment at first, but it didn’t take me long to fall completely in love with the practice. My mornings felt radically different. Having those few minutes to myself before worrying about anything else was exactly what I needed. It was just five minutes, but it changed everything.

The simplest of changes can have the greatest of impacts.

In the months and years since then, my morning quiet time has expanded and now includes some yoga and meditation in addition to journaling. But it didn’t take much for me to first transform my experience in the mornings. All I needed was five minutes.
