One question people ask me all the time is how to start and stick with something new. Whether it’s an idea, goal, or intention – taking that first step can feel daunting. And since it’s that time of year where many of us are thinking about fresh starts, I wanted to chat more about this in today’s post.
Usually, I try to come up with a list of suggestions for questions that I get asked often… because different approaches are helpful for different personalities. But for this particular topic, I’ve got one formula that can work for anybody.
Clarity + Honesty = Successful Commitments
This is the rule of thumb I use every time I consider adding something new to my plate. First I have to get clear about what I want. And then I’ve got to get real about what I can AND am willing to do.
Have you ever made a promise to somebody that you couldn’t keep? I have – and I felt awful letting them down. But what about the promises we make to ourselves that we don’t keep? Those don’t feel good either.
This formula helps me avoid that scenario with both others and myself. It keeps me away from making agreements that I can’t or won’t stick with. For example: I want to exercise daily, but I know that an hour every day is probably not gonna happen. I do love getting some movement in the mornings though and I can definitely set aside 15-20 minutes. So that’s what I commit myself to.
The key for this formula to work is taking some time to get clear. And this tends to be the hard part for me. I love knocking things off of my to-do list and solving problems quickly (so I can stop worrying about them!). But with a never-ending task list, trying to “do it all” always leads me straight to burn-out.
Taking the time to check both my schedule and my gut before making decisions about my time has been an incredibly helpful practice. It’s made a big difference in my efficiency and energy. And it can for you too!
Commitments work when we make them based on clarity and honesty.
So what commitments are YOU thinking about making in 2019? And how can you get more clear and honest with yourself about them? I’d love to hear your plans in a comment below this post or an email!
Peace and blessings,
