The Teacher I Never Liked

I don’t know about you, but I’m not that great at being sad. It’s a feeling that I’ve become intimately familiar with over the years though… and I don’t think I’m alone. The rough patches in life are inevitable – we all face loss, health issues, relationship struggles, and a myriad of other stressful situations. These experiences are unavoidable, but sometimes the emotions they bring up can feel so incredibly heavy. Like a load that’s nearly impossible to carry.

In those moments when we’re forced to deal with truths and circumstances that feel unbearable, it’s hard to imagine how life could ever be ok again. But these moments also have the power to mold us into better versions of ourselves.

Our greatest challenges in life can also be our greatest teachers… if we give them the chance. 

Below are 10 lessons I’ve learned from facing darkness.

    1. The full extent of our strength is only revealed when it’s tested.
    2. Pain is not the enemy. It’s the messenger. Feeling the pain helps us uncover what we need to start feeling better.
    3. Our heart is the pilot of both our body and mind. Tending to it is necessary for survival.  
    4. It’s alright to pause and catch our breath. The world won’t stop spinning if we take a day off.
    5. Freedom lies in surrender. When we let go of our need to control the darkness, we can focus on welcoming in sources of light.
    6. Healing is a process that requires patience. Acceptance and trust take time to develop.
    7. Practicing gratitude shifts perspective. Even during the hardest times, we can find reasons to be grateful.
    8. Everything is temporary. The best experiences in this life and the worst ones all come to an end at some point.
    9. Support appears in many forms. Noticing and taking advantage of it all is the hard part.
    10. Joy and pain are not mutually exclusive. It’s ok to feel both at the same time.
