Who Are You?

The other day, I was looking through some old work and found a poem I’d written a few years ago. It was an assignment during a class I was taking with my friend Imaani Chowdhury. She’s a coach and facilitator of Dr. Brene Brown’s Daring Way curriculum. One week during the course, Imaani instructed us to write a poem using the prompt “I am”.

As I was looking back on this poem, it struck me how good it felt to focus on all these amazing parts of who I am. The experience left me reflecting on the amount time I spend thinking about all the things I still want to be or do compared to how often I recognize everything I already am and do.

It also reminded me how this has been a recurring theme in many of my coaching sessions. Over the last few weeks, just about every client I’ve worked with has expressed the feeling of not being or doing enough.

With the world we live in getting more fast-paced each day, it’s only natural that many of us are struggling to keep up. This sense of not being/doing enough is reaching epidemic proportions because, these days, it’s simply impossible to be/do it all. We’re measuring ourselves according to a standard that’s constantly changing.

But what if that’s the wrong standard?

Maybe instead of catching up, what we really need is to slow down.

What if the true standard of measure we’re looking for is already within us?

Our job of “becoming”  will never end, but we can also gain so much value from moments of allowing ourselves to just be. It’s in these moments of slowing down that we get to practice seeing and loving ourselves exactly as we are. And this practice helps us to strengthen our sense of foundation and rootedness. So our base ends up being even more solid when we do get back to the task of becoming. 

Coming across this old poem of mine was a good reminder for me to take more time to pause and appreciate myself just as I am.
